What is Bloomsday?

Sean Latham, Director of the Oklahoma Center for the Humanities, explains the June 16th literary holiday known as Bloomsday.

The epic novel Ulysses by James Joyce has been banned, praised, criticized and idolized. Considered one of the greatest books ever written, it follows Leopold Bloom through Dublin on a single day: June 16, 1904. Around the world, people now mark this as Bloomsday, a literary holiday that celebrates Irish culture, urban life, and the deeply humane vision of the book itself.

The Oklahoma Center for Humanities celebrates Bloomsday each year in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a pub crawl and readings from Ulysses.
