A Message From the Director (September 2025)

Fall certainly seems to be in the air during this welcome (if unexpected) stretch of cool days, and it brings with it the start of a new academic year along with the launch of new themes and programs at the Oklahoma Center for the Humanities.  Throughout this year, we’ll be exploring the topic of myth and have convened an outstanding group of fellows from across disciplines (including Chemistry!) and well beyond the gates of the university.  You can learn more about this outstanding group of artists and thinkers below while learning more about the new programs and exhibitions we’ve developed in support of our theme.

In addition, the Center has received a $500,000 from the Mellon Foundation that will fund a three-year focus on Sovereignty and Democracy in Indian Country.  To support this work, we have convened a second group of fellows that will approach the topic from perspectives including law, history, art, and data security.  This group too is actively helping us devise a rich collection of programs that will run throughout the year and culminate with a special exhibition in the spring of 2026.

You’ll find information about several other events as well, including a concert featuring the work of Cherokee composer Anjelica Lindsey; a public talk on mapping indigenous lands (in partnership with Phi Beta Kappa); and a brand new exhibition at 101 Archer offering a powerful retrospective of the celebrated Chickasaw artist, weaver, and educator, Margaret Roach Wheeler.  We’ll also welcome familiar partners across the year, including Heller Theater, the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and Tulsa Opera, while hosting our regular First Friday events.  So take a moment to explore what we have planned then join us for what promises to be wide-ranging and compelling year of programming.
