About the Guests:
Dr. Dannagal Goldthwaite Young’s book Irony and Outrage is an incisive survey of the various channels by which both conservative and progressive political satire and commentary are spread. Dr. Dannagal Goldthwaite Young argues opinion talk is the political satire of the right, and political satire is the opinion programming of the left. The language of conservative and progressive discourse is dependent on the channels and platforms that support them.
A.J. Bauer is a Visiting Assistant Professor at NYU and co-editor of the recent book News on the Right. He will start as Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama in 2021. His dissertation, Before ‘Fair and Balanced’: Conservative Media Activism and the Rise of the New Right received support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and American Council of Learned Societies. His work has also appeared in The Daily Texan, the Austin American-Statesman, the Texas Observer, The Patriot Ledger, the Boston Globe, Social Text Periscope and The Guardian.
